How GPA is worked out
For letter grades the usual scale is A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on down to D- = 0.7 and F = 0. Multiply each course's points by its credit hours, add them up and divide by your total credit hours. See how GPA is calculated, step by step.
How UK marks convert to GPA
A GPA (grade point average) gives each module a grade point from 0 to 4.0, then averages them, weighted by credits. UK marks are lower on the page than US ones: 70% is a First, the top class, so it converts to a 4.0. This calculator uses the scale below, which is close to what many US and Canadian universities use.
| UK mark | US grade | GPA points |
|---|---|---|
| 70%+ | A | 4.0 |
| 65-69% | A- | 3.7 |
| 60-64% | B+ | 3.3 |
| 55-59% | B | 3.0 |
| 50-54% | B- | 2.7 |
| 45-49% | C+ | 2.3 |
| 40-44% | C | 2.0 |
| 0-39% | F | 0.0 |
| Degree class | UK marks | GPA |
|---|---|---|
| First | 70% and above | 4.0 |
| 2:1 | 60-69% | 3.3 to 3.7 |
| 2:2 | 50-59% | 2.7 to 3.0 |
| Third | 40-49% | 2.0 to 2.3 |

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Multiply each GPA by the credits it covers, add those together and divide by the total credits. A 3.0 over 30 credits plus a 3.6 term over 15 credits is (90 + 54) ÷ 45 = 3.2.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA, used by many high schools, adds extra points for harder classes, often 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0. Check your school's own rules.
What GPA is a 2:1?
A 2:1 (60-69%) is usually treated as a GPA of about 3.3 to 3.7. A high 2:1 is often seen as roughly a 3.7.
What GPA is a First?
A First (70% and above) is usually treated as a 4.0, the top of the US scale.
How do I calculate my GPA from my marks?
Turn each module's mark into grade points (70% and above is 4.0, 60-64% is 3.3 and so on), multiply each by the module's credits, add them up and divide by your total credits.
Is this conversion official?
No. There's no single official conversion. Universities and credential services such as WES each use their own, so treat this as a good estimate and check with the place you're applying to.
