Guide

Does first year count towards my degree?

At most UK universities, no: your first-year marks don't go into your final degree classification. You do have to pass first year to move on, and a few courses do count it.

The usual rule

On a typical three-year degree in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, your classification comes from Year 2 and your final year only. They are combined in a fixed ratio, most often 40% and 60%. To progress, you normally need to pass first year, usually 40% in each module, or the credits your university requires.

When first year can count

Some courses give it a small weighting, for example 10%. This is more common on integrated master's degrees and some professional courses.

Scottish four-year degrees usually base your honours class on the later honours years, not first year.

Placement and study-abroad years may count, count only as pass or fail, or not count at all, depending on your course.

Your course or programme handbook says exactly which years count and how much. Search it for "classification" or "weighting".

Why first year still matters

Placement and internship applications in Year 2 often ask for your first-year marks, because they are all you have. First year is also where you learn how marking works at university, which pays off when the marks start to count.

Once you know your weighting, see what you need for a First or a 2:1, or use the degree classification calculator.

Questions

Do I need to pass first year?

Yes. You normally need to pass first year, often 40% in each module, to move into Year 2, even when it doesn't count towards your class.

Does first year count at Scottish universities?

Usually not. Scottish honours degrees are normally classified on the later honours years.

Do employers look at first-year marks?

Sometimes. Placement and internship applications in Year 2 often ask for them, because they are the only university marks you have at that point.
